Senior School Head of Year at John Paul College in Daisy Hill



1.       Job Title:                              Senior School Head of Year

We are seeking an experienced person to take on the role of a Senior School Head of Year and to join and complement the skills of our current team.  The successful applicant will be required to take responsibility for the pastoral support and guidance of students in Year 10. John Paul College provides an environment based firmly on the quality of mutual respect.

The position of Head of Year has a tenure of three (3) years which concludes with the graduation of their cohort at the end of Year 12. However, the successful candidate would become a permanent member of the John Paul College staff and be eligible to reapply for a further term as Head of Year.
Specific Expectations and Responsibilities:
·         Each HOY will aim to be the Head of Year for the assigned cohort as it passes through the six year levels of Senior Schooling (from arrival in Year 7 to Graduation at the end of Year 12), commencing with a three year tenure to Year 9, if successful followed by a second tenure to Year 12.
·         To ensure a smooth transition into the school year by presenting the cohort with clear guidelines which reflect both the College ethos and the greater expectations associated with the level’s increasing maturity and leadership responsibilities. To present this message as a ‘rite of passage’ which needs to be earned from Year 6 to Year 7
·         To be the first point of contact for teachers of the level in respect to any student concerns related to behaviour or welfare
·         To respond efficiently and fairly to any referrals by teachers of student pastoral, behavioral or disciplinary concerns
·         To promptly alert the Heads of Learning (HsOL) when a student’s pastoral concerns may impact on academic progress
·         To consult with the other Heads of Year about any behavioral or pastoral issues of a significant nature
·         To escalate to the Senior School Head and Middle School Head about any behavioral concerns which are repetitive in nature.
·         While respecting student privacy and confidentiality, provide teachers with appropriate and relevant information about students of concern within the cohort
·         To support teachers with appropriate strategies when they are dealing with difficult situations
·         To run meaningful and purposeful Year Level Assemblies each cycle
·         To foster the emerging leadership skills of all Senior School students, through mentoring and the provision of opportunity through vehicles such as the Year Level Assembly
·         To provide leadership in the planning and organization of year level retreats and camps
·         To lead by example though organizational excellence and passion
·         To implement, in consultation with fellow HOY, a Pastoral Care program which clearly reflects the College ethos and expectations
Curriculum:
·         To model excellent teaching practice
·         To support innovation in the design of curriculum which reflects the rationale and ethos of learning in Senior School
·         To assist colleagues in developing engaging learning environments by providing advice on student management and best teaching practice.
·         To willingly contribute to professional conversations about curriculum and learning in both formal and informal settings
Technology:
·         To model the innovative use of technology
·         To implement and support the use of JPConnect.net
The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of existing curriculum together with the ability to provide innovative learning experiences.
