Director of Boarding at Rockhampton Girls Grammar School



1.       Job Title:                              Director of Boarding to commence in January 2014

Rockhampton Girls Grammar School is seeking a passionate and innovative Director of Boarding to commence January 2014. The Boarding School accommodates 160 students in five dorms. The successful applicant is required to live on campus full time. An attractive remuneration package for this executive level role includes:

This role exists to:
·         Work actively with other members of Executive to ensure the best possible outcomes for the School as a whole.
·         Manage the Boarding budget and make recommendations in relation to boarding requirements.
·         Responsibility for boarding services, the dormitories, boarding staff, quality of communication with parents and wellbeing of boarding students.
·         Share relevant information with the Day School to ensure best outcomes for parents and students.
·         Utilize electronic record keeping (file note, absences, medical notes, etc)
·         Promote Boarding in Regional Centres
Student Management & Support:
·         Attend interviews with prospective boarders.
·         Allocate beds for each student each term or whenever a change is necessary.
·         Each evening at dinner, receive feedback from boarding staff on individual student behaviour, emotional wellbeing and whereabouts.
·         Organize weekend shopping visits for boarders and speak with each girl as they come to check in.
·         Keep car fuelled and serviced for emergency transport of girls.
·         Organize collection of items for Boarders (e.g. Boarders’ blazers and hats from the dry cleaners/embroiderers).
·         Liaise with Boarding interest groups
·         Maintain active membership of ABSA (Australian Boarding Schools Association).
·         Maintain active membership of ICPA (Isolated Children Parents’ Association).
Staff Management & Support
·         Manage the Boarding Office and the work of the Administrative Assistant.
·         Develop Boarding staff rosters (within the parameters set by the annual budget) that are effective and relevant to ensure the duty of care to all students is met. Rosters have to be adjusted on a regular basis when staff are unwell or absent for any reason or when numbers in dorms are fluctuating (e.g. on weekends).
·         Monitor and sign off time sheets, which accurately reflect work completed in line with rosters.
·         Monitor and control accrued TOIL and banked hours.
·         Interviewing and inducting new boarding staff as the need arises ie with a core of stable staff, the casual staff and live-ins may frequently change.
·         Assist the dorm staff in handling any disciplinary issues.
·         Provide leadership and support to boarding staff.
·         Undertake annual appraisal with boarding staff.
·         Ensure boarding staff have access to and are conversant with the ABSA ‘Duty of Care’ Course and that they undertake training when it is feasible to do so.
·         Ensure that boarding staff are able to make use of school-provided Professional Learning opportunities, where relevant.
Liaise with HR to:
·         Advertise, interview, hire and manage staff.
·         Ensure that arrangements with staff are transparent and documented.
·         Ensure all employment contracts and position descriptions are appropriate and signed.
·         Ensure all residential contracts are accurate and signed.
Liaise with the Health Centre Coordinator to:
·         Ensure the individual needs of students are appreciated and met.
·         Accept responsibility of deciding whether girls need medical attention and what type, in the absence of the nurse (which is all the time students are in the dorms).
Liaise with Catering Services to:
·         Advise of numbers for meals, so that food is adequate but not wasted.
·         Ensure systems in place to provide for student late meals.
Liaise with Facilities and Services Manager to:
·         Maintain audit of repair and maintenance needs in the dormitories.
·         Ensure that maintenance issues are addressed.
·         Ensure that quality laundry services are being delivered.
·         Ensure that drivers are available as required.
·         Ensure Boarding staff Residences are maintained adequately and prepared for new staff.
·         Make preparation for billets during holiday periods, Boarding–related visitors or reunion sleepovers.
·         Secure quotes and complete purchase orders for items required by dorm staff (e.g. vacuum cleaners, irons, kettles, toasters, ironing boards and covers, curtains, curtain hooks, shower curtains).

Duties:

Selection Criteria:
  • Well-developed oral communication and presentation skills with a demonstrated ability to deliver, with confidence and flexibility, successful learning programs
  • Proven ability to work individually and as part of a team, with a range of people – including fellow presenters and other internal and external stakeholders
  • A strong empathy with the vision and purpose of the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, knowledge of and an interest in Australian political and social history. Tertiary qualifications in Australian History, politics, museum studies or education would be an advantage.

Senior School Head of Year at John Paul College in Daisy Hill



1.       Job Title:                              Senior School Head of Year

We are seeking an experienced person to take on the role of a Senior School Head of Year and to join and complement the skills of our current team.  The successful applicant will be required to take responsibility for the pastoral support and guidance of students in Year 10. John Paul College provides an environment based firmly on the quality of mutual respect.

The position of Head of Year has a tenure of three (3) years which concludes with the graduation of their cohort at the end of Year 12. However, the successful candidate would become a permanent member of the John Paul College staff and be eligible to reapply for a further term as Head of Year.
Specific Expectations and Responsibilities:
·         Each HOY will aim to be the Head of Year for the assigned cohort as it passes through the six year levels of Senior Schooling (from arrival in Year 7 to Graduation at the end of Year 12), commencing with a three year tenure to Year 9, if successful followed by a second tenure to Year 12.
·         To ensure a smooth transition into the school year by presenting the cohort with clear guidelines which reflect both the College ethos and the greater expectations associated with the level’s increasing maturity and leadership responsibilities. To present this message as a ‘rite of passage’ which needs to be earned from Year 6 to Year 7
·         To be the first point of contact for teachers of the level in respect to any student concerns related to behaviour or welfare
·         To respond efficiently and fairly to any referrals by teachers of student pastoral, behavioral or disciplinary concerns
·         To promptly alert the Heads of Learning (HsOL) when a student’s pastoral concerns may impact on academic progress
·         To consult with the other Heads of Year about any behavioral or pastoral issues of a significant nature
·         To escalate to the Senior School Head and Middle School Head about any behavioral concerns which are repetitive in nature.
·         While respecting student privacy and confidentiality, provide teachers with appropriate and relevant information about students of concern within the cohort
·         To support teachers with appropriate strategies when they are dealing with difficult situations
·         To run meaningful and purposeful Year Level Assemblies each cycle
·         To foster the emerging leadership skills of all Senior School students, through mentoring and the provision of opportunity through vehicles such as the Year Level Assembly
·         To provide leadership in the planning and organization of year level retreats and camps
·         To lead by example though organizational excellence and passion
·         To implement, in consultation with fellow HOY, a Pastoral Care program which clearly reflects the College ethos and expectations
